Hello,

I finally managed to get the SVN repo working properly whereby I have now setup a folder 'lang' which can house the translation files.

I decided to opt for Subversion as the means of managing these files over an earlier idea of using a wiki page per language. The reason for this is due to the way the files themselves will change inclemently and
a wiki page would have quickly become very unwieldy. Unfortunately this does mean the any translators will need to use SVN too. However, anyone who doesn't want to go to that difficultly can get in touch with me through email.

For those happy to use the SVN setup let me explain how to use it. I'd recommend RapidSVN as an easy to use GUI to Subversion. When you fire it goto 'Bookmmarks' >> 'Add existing repository' and use the URL 'svn://svn.geekisp.com/halite'. To get write access to the lang folder you need to use the user name and password. To try and avoid casual spam these won't be posted but are availible upon request, just send me a mail.

The language files are the .TXT files, the .RC files are generated automatically from the .TXT files and don't need to be worried about.

So if you want to contribute a translation download the Template.txt file and rename it to your language. When naming the file try to stick to non-unicode filenames, inside the files you can of course use unicode as necessary.

The file will look something like this-

"English" ---> ???
"MS Shell Dlg" ---> ???
"Torrent" ---> ???
"Tracker" ---> ???
"" ---> ???
"msctls_progress32" ---> ???
"N/A" ---> ???

Replace the '???'s with your translations, any you don't add will remain in English. This can be an incremental process, half translated files will work, they'll just still conain some English text. Also note that not all strings should be translated, for example "msctls_progress32" needs to remain as it is. In future I'll screen those bits of text out to avoid any confusion but for the moment if you do translate something which needed to remain unchanged I can fix that so it's no problem. So for example you might end up with a file like the following-

"English" ---> "1337"
"MS Shell Dlg" ---> ???
"Torrent" ---> "70|2|23n7"
"Tracker" ---> "7|24CK3|2"
"" ---> ???
"msctls_progress32" ---> ???
"N/A" ---> "N/4"

Also note that the very first string "English" should be set to the language name, here you can use unicode and this name is what the UI will use when presenting a list of language options to users. If you run into any troubles committing these files back onto the repository send them to me in an email and I'll do it.

I probably didn't make that all very clear but I'll start a thread in the forums which will be the ideal place to ask any questions. Hopefully that will address any issues people might run into.

Finally let me just say thanks to anyone who volunteers to do a translation, it's very much appreciated. And again let me say that this will be an incremental process, half-done translations are still very much appreciated.

I downloaded the recommended RapidSVN, Login worked just fine.
But for some reason I neither can't figure out how to get the template.txt to export to my comp nor how to edit it online. All I get are Errormessages like the requestet data is a file, not a directory (na doh) etc.
Do you think you could have the actual Template.txt in English somewhere as a downloadable file. On subsequent versions I could run my own Diff...no problem.

I think Netherlands is the country and the Dutch is the official language of Netherlads.

I'm not sure yet if I'll try to find one size fits all or make the adjustments on a per language basis I'll have to look into it properly but first I want to tackle the bug reported by kapsnet and bug.

I thought I'll post some instructions on using the commandline svn approach which in many ways is much simpler to RapidSVN.

To login in for the first time cd the a desired working directory and issue the command

svn checkout svn://svn.geekisp.com/halite/lang

That should download all the language files. Now if there isn't already a translation for language make a copy of the Template.txt file renamed appropriately. Then add this file to the local repository with the command

Code:

svn add ./lang/NewLang.txt

In future you won't need to perform these two steps, instead you need only cd to your local working directory and issue the command

Code:

svn update

I would recommend always updating your local repo in case someone else has modified your translation file since you last updated it.

Finally after you've made changes you can commit them back to the online repository with the simple command

Code:

svn commit ./lang --username the_user_name --message "Some message just needed for the logs."

You'll also be asked for the password at this point.

German translation uploaded to SVN
I tried to stay within the boundaries of the English template, as much as possible.
But I would like very much a way to crosscheck with the actual Program.
Meaning the ability for Halite to use an external language file, just to prevent messing up the GUI

It says Nederlands, not Netherlands.

Nederlands is how the Dutch call their language.

devGod, didn't realise myself that you typed "Nederlands". I would say yes use the native word for the language, I think that's what users would expect.

Don't you worry about it, Eoin. No rush. I just can't see you tweaking GUIs for every language, every time. Just set the parameters once (as wide as possible) and let the translators take care of the rest.
When I translated the 2.8 (by editing the .EXE) I had to modify the GUI at 2 or 3 spots (which is not bad, really...in Foxit Reader it used to be more like 25 - 30 locations). German Language tends to be lenghty at times
My goal is to keep it short and snappy without changing the actual meaning.We're getting there :up: :up:

Hi. I am actually translating Halite in french, but I have a little question. It will be possible to check the tranlation with the next Halite for testing, before the publication ? I ask it because, some things are a bit difficult to translate without the program (for a better translation). ^^

Hi chiclete, try it with forward slashes, '/', I think Subversion requires them.

@webdr: Thank you for the link to TortoiseSVN !!
I just checked it out and I must say I like it much better than RapidSVN.
It integrates with Explorer, so all the relevant actions are acessible by a simple right-click.
PLUS the changing icons make it very easy to spot which file was changed and which file hasn't been sent to the repository yet.

Norwegian translation is also online. This is a rough draft and I have to see the result in Halite before I can tune the length of the text and fine tune the words.

Hope Norwegian will be included in the next release :-)
